Lecture Session on International Customs Law organized by Amity Law School, Noida

 Giving students insights into the global activities, two lecture sessions were organized by Amity School, Noida under the International Lecture Session Series- Taking Amity to the World and Bringing the World to Amity. In this lecture session, Mr. Anthony Cambas, International Trade Specialist, University of Mississippi, USA gave a lecture on ‘International Customs Law’ while Dr. Adetutu Aina Pelemo, Sub-Dean, Law School, Redeemer's University, Nigeria gave insights on ‘Sexual harassment in the workplace’. Dr. D. K. Bandyopadhyay, chairman, Amity School, Noida welcomed the guests on the occasion. Dr. Aditya Tomar and Dr. Shefali Raizada, additional director, Amity School, Noida were also present on the occasion. 

Addressing students about international customs law (ICL), Mr. Anthony Cambas, said that it is an international law which is enforced by customs and other border management agencies. He added that ICL is implemented into national legislations and regulations and may be considered as a subset of Public International Law. He further stated that ICL is considered as a new and distinct field of study that emanates from diverse sources. Bilateral agreements, conferences and treaties, local agreements, conferences and treaties and multilateral agreements, conferences and treaties, etc., are the main sources of international customs law. The World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Institute, the International Institute of Civil Aviation, the agreement on international trade on the forest and forest of the extinct species, the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, etc., are linked to the International Customs Law. Mr. Cambas said that intellectual property rights, customs valuation, trade facilitation and antidumping and countervailing duties etc. are examples of international customs law. Stating the challenges faced by the International Customs Act, he said that Trade Policy Formulation and Execution; Negotiating treaties/agreements; Signing; Ratification; Entering into force; Implementation etc are some of the challenges of ICL. He advised the students to make careers in the field of international customs law. 

 

Dr. Palemo while briefing the students about “Sexual harassment at workplace", saying that ‘any unwelcome sexual advances; request for sexual favours; or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, which in the reasonable  perception of the person concerned, interferes with studies, work, productivity or general sense of wellbeing of others” are covered under sexual harassment. She averred that the harassment consists of three parts, sexual harassment, non-sexual harassment (workplace bully) and sexual harassment and non-sexual harassment (gender harassment). She also informed that the main 5 types of sexual harassment are gender harassment; sexual imposition or assault; seductive behaviour; sexual bribery and sexual coercion. Stating the effects, she said that sexual harassment reduces the performance of the victim, they lose confidence and remain alone; interest is eliminated from work or education; psychological and physical health challenges increase and diseases like stress, insomnia are born inside the person. She conveyed the steps taken by the individual to prevent sexual harassment, preventive measures to be taken by the institutions and the provision of punishment. 

Welcoming the guests, Dr. D. K. Bandyopadhyay, chairman, Amity School, Noida, said that in Amity, students are provided with the opportunity to get more information through experts through such international lecture sessions. In today's global era, it is necessary to ensure students' participation in such work-order events for the overall development of students.
