Commemorating World Cancer Day, Amity Institute of Molecular Medicine & Stem Cell Research (AIMMSCR) organized a ‘Cancer Awareness Programme’ virtually at Amity University. A ‘Public Lecture on Cancer’ was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Kumar, Ex-Professor of Surgery, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow and Founder Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal to mark the occasion.
Dr. Sandeep Kumar elaborated on the topic ‘Cancer New Methods of Diagnosis & Treatment’. He stressed on renaming the global day as World Cancer Control Day. He shared that cancer is an uncontrolled unchecked growth of cells that is a parasite on the body and eats up the body’s nutrition & is also a collection of old cells that fail to die. He stated that cancer is a malignant growth and talked of the various types of cancer in humans calling for increased human resources to take care of & cure cancer patients. He also averred that cancer is caused by genetic constitution vis-à-vis environmental factors like diet, viral & bacterial infections, substance, physical/chemical/social environment, lifestyle, spiritual health & stress. Dr. Kumar elaborated how emotional instability and constipation owing to dietary habits is being taken as a growing cause of cancer as detected by AI.
Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) welcomed the guest and the various attendees and shared that World Cancer Day is observed every year to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage its Prevention, Detection and Treatment. He also suggested following a yearly diagnosis of cancer.
Dr. B.C. Das, HoI & Chairman, AIMMSCR & Dean, Health and Allied Sciences, AUUP stated that the primary objective of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer & how cancer can be cured if detected early. He added that cancer is the second most important disease after cardiovascular diseases that has been causing an increasing number of deaths. He averred that the theme of World Cancer Day 2021, “I can, we can” acknowledges that everyone has the capacity to address the cancer burden, and everyone can work together to reduce cancer risk factors. He also shared how AIMMSCR has been working extensively in the field of cancer research.
The session was well-attended by students, staff and faculty members.
