Mental Health must not be ignored”, says Dr. Gagandeep Kaur, Director-Unique Psychological Services & Practicing Clinical Psychologist, during a “Five -day Online Workshop on Mental Health & Well-being” at Amity

Amity Centre for Guidance and Counselling (ACGC), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, is conducting an insightful and informative Five-Day Online Workshop on the theme “Mental Health & Well-being” from 20th June to 24th June, 2022 on virtual platform.

Sharing valuable guidance on “Moving from an ‘Anxious me’ to a ‘Calmer me’”, Dr. Gagandeep Kaur, Director-Unique Psychological Services & Practicing Clinical Psychologist, averred, “Mental health awareness is extremely important, keeping in mind the fast-paced lives, societal, family and peer pressure which an individual faces today. Mental health must never be ignored and should never be taken lightly since it is as important as the physical well-being and both contribute equally to the overall well-being of an individual. Anxiety is a very common mental state experienced by each one of us. When a person is worried about something constantly, it leads to anxiety. Being anxious about a situation is quite common in daily life and the fear of the unknown also leads to anxiety. However, a person should be in control of their emotions as excessive anxiety can be detrimental to our mental health. One must learn to accept life as it comes, nothing in the world works against a person and whatever happens, happens for the best. Learning new skills and enhancing knowledge also helps in becoming calmer and being at peace, mentally. Problems are a part of life and they push us to become better and brings a lot of opportunities with them. Therefore, being scared of the unknown or running away from problems, is never the solution. Also, worrying about what others might think of one’s actions is not going to help in anyway as worrying about other’s opinion always leads to anxiety. Believing in oneself, being confident and resilient are the mantras for ensuring good mental health.”

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Mrs. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor Amity University Uttar Pradesh stated, “Mental health is often ignored and people take their mental problems very casually, without giving them much importance. This can lead to serious consequences. One must be emotionally sensitive and care for others but being overly sentimental and emotional makes one an emotionally disbalanced person. Professional counselling is also very important and one must never hesitate or shy away from seeking a psychiatrist or counsellor’s help. Peer Pressure and parental pressure are other major factors which contribute to one’s mental illness. In today’s materialistic world, everyone wants success at a fast rate and instant gratification which leads an individual to achieve unrealistic goals. Considering the scenario today, there is no time for inner enrichment or introspection by an individual which is extremely essential for mental well-being.”

Welcoming the guests, Prof. (Dr) Harminder Kaur Gujral-Head-Consortium-Amity Centre for Guidance and Counselling, Amity University Uttar Pradesh said, “Mental health includes emotional, psychological and social well-being. It has crucial impact on the ideas, feelings, and behaviour of an individual. It also helps an individual in making decisions, and dealing with stress. Mental health is important at all stages of life starting from childhood to old age.
