Guest Lecture on Non-invasive Bioelectronics for Beyond Precision and Personalised Healthcare, at Amity University

The keynote speaker was Dr. Alex Casson who is an Associate Professor at The University of Manchester, Manchester, England. This presentation was an overview to work on hardware and software for wearables: non-invasive wearable-like devices which can monitor a number of physiological parameters, with embedded real-time signal analysis and machine learning, and to ultimately enable closed loop stimulation. The work spans from conventional low power electronic system design, to printed electronics on flexible substrates for obtaining better skin conformality, to artificial intelligence that analyses the collected data in real time.

The event was Organized by Dr. Ashwani Kumar Dubey, Professor, at Amit University, Noida and Chairperson Signal & Image Processing (SIP) Club. Dr. Ashwani Kumar Dubey started the seminar by inviting all the dignitaries as well as the participants to the seminar followed by the introduction of Keynote Speaker Dr.Alex Casson who has many achievements and accolades to his name. Following this Dr. Ashwani invited Dr. Manoj Kumar Pandey, Joint Head of Institution, Amity School of Engineering and Technology addressed the gathering and gave an insight about Amity University and the research field Amity University works upon. Then Prof (Dr.) Abhay Bansal, Joint Head, Amity School of Engineering and Technology talked about the benefit of the seminar and briefed about the Amity University abroad. He informed the wide range of Amity University around the globe and the future plan of Amity to open 50 new campuses in the next 10 years. He also informed about reaccredited of the Engineering courses and aim of making global engineers and share the idea of Global Classroom. Lastly, he congratulated the team of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering for organizing such informative sessions. Moving head Dr. J K Rai, Head of Department, Chairperson Embedded Systems and Robotics Research Group to address the gathering. He briefed about the participants who are the Undergraduate students of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Then Dr. Ashwani invited Ms Dr.Alex Casson to address the audience.

Dr. Alex Casson started the seminar by introducing himself and his university. He further introduced his Lab and his research area and the opportunities available in this domain. Continuing with his talk Dr. Alex Casson  stated how wearable devices can be used to monitor a number of parameters in the human body like heart rate, brain etc. Some of the wearable devices include watches, neckband etc. and he stated how miniaturization is playing an important role in wearable devices. Further he stated that in his lab his main aim is to scale up the performance of these devices to monitor the human body parameters. The Scale up parameters included inkjet printing and various other parameters.

He presented some signals in which the EEG was used behind the ears to record the parameters and transmit it to the mobile devices. He showed another example of printing for personalisation in which different electrodes were used for hair, head, etc.

Now he introduced the Neuromodulation as a part of this presentation which has its application in Parkinson’s, epilepsy, Alzeheimer’s but his lab focused more on the Non-Invasive side. Dr. Alex Casson stated that Neuromodulation is variable in different people and it's more into the clinical trials stages and needs more improvement because of low participation in this study. He stated the challenges which he faces in his labs that include Real time neuroimaging, Low Computational complexity etc. Dr.Alex Casson presented Phantom Head testing models and discussed the limitations that model has. Further he showed the results of this model testing on different human bodies that helped the audience to differentiate between the two testing results.

Finally Dr.Alex Casson summed up the seminar with discussing the summary of the whole presentation which included how the electronics can be integrated with circuits then the closed loop simulation and finally the integration of On device machine Learning. Then Dr. J K Rai , Head of Department, Electronics and Communication Engineering Asked whether there is a replacement of the electrodes which are being used in his lab to which Dr.Alex Casson Explained and Stated that there are some in his lab which he will be working upon. The seminar was Joined by Dr.V K Jain, Vice-President, Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) who explained the importance of this technology and asked about the usage of pressure sensors in the projects.

Dr.Alex Casson Answered  the questions put by the audience in the best possible way. Then Dr. Ashwani Kumar Dubey thanked everyone and proposed the vote of thanks.
