Amity University celebrates World Physiotherapy Week

Dr. Ruchi Varshney, National Head, IAP Women Cell addressing the gathering at Amity

Amity Institute of Health and Allied Sciences, Amity University Noida, is observing World Physiotherapy Week-2024 from 10th -12th September 2024, to commemorate World Physiotherapy Day- 2024.

Addressing the students, Dr. Ruchi Varshney, National Head, Indian Association of Physiotherapists, Women Cell, averred, “In most of the cases, physiotherapy is not the first choice of students, and they opt for it as a second choice when they get rejected in mainstream medical entrance exams. However, physiotherapy should be given equal importance as other streams of health and allied sciences. It is a holistic and scientifically backed way of treating disfunctions of a human body.” Advising the students, she added, “Instead of asking what my institution is giving me, students must always aim to give back to the institution by performing well in their studies and bringing laurels to their institution and profession.”

Sharing his views on World Physiotherapy Day, Dr Ashish Deshwal, Member Delhi Council for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, New Delhi, stated, “WHO has declared Lower Back Pain as an epidemic, which affects about 60-70% of the world’s population and it is a myth that only long sitting postures lead to lower back pain. Vitamin deficiency, lack of regular exercise and strenuous physical activity also causes lower back pain.  Physiotherapy is completely harmless, non-invasive and is very effective in treating back pain and patients who go for regular physiotherapy sessions benefit immensely from the treatment.”

Dr. Khyatee, Director, Pratyaksh Medical Care, opined, “Lower back pain is the most common musculoskeletal condition and the leading causing of disability worldwide. In the current scenario, lower back pain affects people of all age groups, starting with children to elderly people. Physiotherapists play a crucial role in the management of back pain through assessment, treatment and education. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, embracing evidence-based practices, focusing on patient-centered care, utilizing technology, and engaging in community outreach, physiotherapists can significantly contribute to the effective management of back pain.”

Highlighting the significance of World Physiotherapy Day, Prof (Dr) B. C. Das, Dean, Amity Institute of Health & Allied Sciences, said, “World Physiotherapy Day is celebrated every year on 8th September to raise awareness about the critical role of physical therapists in keeping the people healthy and fit. Physiotherapists have immense contribution in treating people suffering from all kinds of body ache since Physiotherapy provides great relief from muscular joint pain, without having any side effects, as there is no use of medicines or drugs.”

On this occasion, a Panel Discussion on “Low Back Pain” was also held wherein the expert panellists including Dr. Ruchi Varshney, National Head, IAP Women Cell, Dr. Khyatee, Director, Pratyaksh Medical Care, and Prof (Dr) Jasobanta Sethi, Director, AIHAS, amongst others, shared their valuable insights.
