Amity Law School, Amity University Uttar Pradesh Noida, organized the 6th Edition of Indian Qualifying Rounds of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2023, from 23rd to 26th February 2023, wherein National Academy for Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad, was declared the winner. Institute of Law, Nirma University, was adjudged the runner-up and the top 4 semi-finalists were Gujarat National Law University, NALSAR Hyderabad, Institute of Law Nirma University and The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.
During the 4-day competition, 37 teams, including 15 teams from National Law Universities such as Gujarat National Law University, Institute of Law, Nirma University, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, The WB National University of Juridical Sciences, National Law School of India University and Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law participated, apart from renowned institutions such as Government Law College, Mumbai and Jindal Global Law School, amongst many others.
Addressing the gathering during the Valedictory Session, Hon’ble Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, Judge, Delhi High Court, stated, “It is heartening to see the young law students being so confident and fulfilling their responsibilities sincerely. Through Moot Court Competitions, law students get the opportunity to express what they have learnt as it provides them with practical knowledge and experience of trial rooms.”
Advising the budding lawyers, she further added, “Law is not a business, it is a service to the society and nation. Aspiring lawyers must consider it as their duty to resolve the problems and sufferings of the people through their profession. Also, unlearning is more important than learning, therefore obsolete concepts and methodologies must be discarded, and new, relevant concepts should be adopted by the young lawyers. They must patiently listen to the other party and make points to make their case stronger. It is also important to be gracious enough to acknowledge your ignorance if you are not aware of something and attain complete knowledge of your subject.”
Sharing the mantras to become a good lawyer, Hon’ble Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Judge, Delhi High Court, said, “It is extremely crucial to bear in mind professional ethics since they lend credibility to the legal profession. Therefore, lawyers must never compromise on their ethical values. People approach lawyers in distressed circumstances, and it is only through the legal system, whereby they can find peaceful resolution to their problems. It is essential that cyber technology must be used very wisely and carefully since the sense of good judgment cannot be rested on technology or Artificial Intelligence, it is the human touch and sensitivity which is very significant in the legal profession.”
Hon’ble Justice Vivek Agarwal, Judge, Madhya Pradesh High Court, asserted, “The primary reason to take the legal profession must be to help people and not just earn a living. Commercialization of the legal profession has led to a decline and degradation of the profession. Delay in the process of attaining justice must be curtailed as it takes several years or sometimes decades to deliver complete justice to a person. Rights are important but duties are far more important than rights, therefore, legal professionals must perform their duties well.”
Sharing his words of wisdom, Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group, said, “Amity started the first Law School in 1999 and today, it is a proud moment for us to see the young law students organizing this prestigious law competition so well. Legal profession is a highly noble profession as it provides service to the society and contributes to nation building. Indian lawyers are the best lawyers in the world since they belong to the land of ‘Rishis’ and ‘Munis’ and possess their wisdom, apart from the knowledge attained through their educational curriculum. Students must learn from the esteemed dignitaries who addressed them today and take their advice seriously so that they can become great lawyers. Students must also observe the body language and demeanor of judges during the trial and plead for time to present their case in a thorough manner.”
On this occasion, a Souvenir comprising of the detailed event report was also launched in the presence of esteemed guests and dignitaries. Also present during the Valedictory Session were Dr. D.K. Bandopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, Dr. Shefali Raizada, Dr. Aditya Tomar and Dr. Arvind P. Bhanu, Additional Directors of Amity Law School and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. Bhawna Batra, National Administrator Jessup India, 2023.
