Cancer Awareness Walk at Amity University

Biosciences & Biotechnology and Health & Allied Sciences Domains, Amity University Uttar Pradesh Noida Campus, organized various activities on the occasion of World Cancer Day,  with the aim to raise cancer awareness.

Dr. Sumant Gupta, MBBS, MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Medical Oncology), Director, Metro Cancer Institute, Faridabad, averred, “Cancer is a large group of diseases (over 200) characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Every year about 15 lakh new cancer cases are reported in India. Amongst men, lung cancer is the most common while breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Lifestyle disorders, environmental factors, pathogens and genetic mutations are the main causes of cancer. Early detection, a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and consuming coloured fruits and vegetables can help in preventing cancer to a great extent.”

Rashtriya Padma Bhushan and Bharat Vibhushan awardee Dr. Sana Tariq, Vice-President, Metro Group of Hospitals, stated, “Cancer is curable and nearly 40% of cancers can be cured if detected early. Our body gives us signals when something is wrong and we must never ignore these signals. Today, there are vaccines available for cervical cancer, which can prevent the disease completely in women.  Institutions like Amity are doing a commendable work of spreading awareness regarding cancer and giving hope to humanity.”

Sharing her inspirational story, Ms. Kajal Prasad, the Cancer Survivor, said, “I was diagnosed with cancer twice, first time with intestinal cancer and the second time with kidney cancer. There were moments when I was depressed but I did not give up the fight against cancer. The support,  care and the courage provided by my doctors was truly invaluable for me at that time.  One must never assume and draw their own conclusions if they feel some discomfort or ailment in their body. They must seek immediate professional medical help and go for full body check-up and diagnosis.  Strong will power and hope can  help cancer patients to overcome the disease, and they should always remain hopeful.”

Prof. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, stated, “World Cancer Awareness Day addresses myths, fear, and stigma around cancer. It promotes equitable access to cancer care for everyone. Some years ago, cancer was considered as a fatal disease and people used to get scared when they heard the word “cancer”. However, it is not the case anymore and cancer is curable if detected early. There are many advanced treatments available today which can cure the disease, although there is a need to create more awareness about cancer and institutions must come forward and take lead in this direction.”

(Dr.) Bhudev C. Das, Chairman, Amity Institute of Molecular Medicine and Stem Cell Research (AIMMSCR), said, “World Cancer Day encourages prevention, early detection, and timely treatment. Many cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes and regular screening. Early diagnosis increases chances of survival and minimises the effects of cancer.”

“Cancer Awareness Walk” around the Amity campus, Poster Presentation & Quiz was also held to mark World Cancer Day at Amity.
