Lecture on ‘Ecology and Economy integrated clustering approaches for sustainable development

A lecture on ‘Ecology and Economy integrated clustering approaches for sustainable development’ was delivered by Dr. T V Ramachandra - Professor, Energy & Wetlands Research Group - Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The concept of economic clustering and trade guilds in India has roots in pre-history. Cluster based economic development approach aids in laying the foundations of a microeconomic approach for prosperity and growth at decentralized levels. These approaches are emerging to help economies reap the potential of improved macroeconomic aspects of a region. These are easily implementable and constitute a vital path for a broader reorientation of research and economic policy. Approaches of cluster based local development include the scope for harvesting local skills, upgrading skills to meet challenges, identification of trainers and training institutes, generating economic opportunities for the poor and encouragement of participatory approach. The talk by Dr. Ramachandra gave an overview of the same in the context of integrating ecological and economic factors.

He talked about his study area of the Western Ghats that constitute five percent of the country’s geographical area and contribute to the water sustainability of the peninsular region. He further averred about Nature’s Principles of Equilibrium and how humans can practice sustainability so that local people are not denied their right to live. He shared the example of Vijaynagar Empire and Easter Island that were cited as metaphors for an ecological disaster due to an imbalance of resources and the growing population. He stated that ecological footprints are not equal across the globe due to misuse of natural resources.
